The Cornish City was built by Williams Doxford and Sons, Ltd in Sunderland in 1943 for the Ministry of Transport.

| On her maiden voyage in 1943 the appointed Master was Frank Spikins, First Mate Basil Wheeler, Chief Engineer Harvey Orr and Second Engineer Thomas Barker. All the officers and crew that voyage were British. She had arrived New York on 7th August from Sunderland and she was destined to sail to Alexandria from the US. |
